Every language in the world has five registers.  Frozen register is language that is always the same, like the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.  Formal register is the standard sentence syntax and word choice of business and education that includes complete sentences and specific word choice.  This register has a vocabulary as big as the dictionary.  Consultative register is formal register when used in conversation.  Casual register is the language between friends and family and is characterized by a 400-800 word vocabulary.  Word choice is general and not specific, conversation is dependent upon non-verbal assists, and the sentence syntax is often incomplete.  And intimate register is the language between lovers and twins.

Here is the difficulty.  Most of our families in poverty and near poverty communicate only in casual register and cannot communicate in formal register.  All state tests and curriculums are written in formal register.  Books are written in formal register and have sequence, order, cause and effect and a conclusion:  all skills necessary for problem solving, inference, etc.  Everyone who wants to succeed in education and business must have a working knowledge of and be able to use formal register.  Our POWER 2 class is designed to help graduates think, write and learn in formal register.
